Cut! tells the making of a Z-series film – a choice that might seem disrespectful at the opening of the world’s largest film festival. Michel Hazanavicius, King of Pastiche, parodies the zombie film this time with a beautiful cast: Romain Duris, Bérénice Béjot, Finnegan Oldfield, Luàna Bajrami, Grégory Gadebois, Jean-Pascal Zadi and Raïka Hazanavicius, the director’s daughter for the premiere times screen.
It’s a UFO that the director of The artist, and it is successful!
As a filmmaker looking for inspiration, Rémi agrees to make a low-budget zombie film. Filming in an industrial wasteland brings together a reduced and jaded crew, actors and actresses to be tested, and a charged director. Greenish monsters, car chases and liters of hemoglobin splatter across the screen until real undead invite themselves onto the set.
This reissue of Do not cut! by the Japanese Shin’ichirô Ueda (2019) fits Michel Hazanavicius like a glove. Titled first Z (like Zombie and Series Z) the film was renamed Cut! director because of the war in Ukraine, the letter has become an acronym identifying Russian troops. If it is the opposite of the original title (Do not cut!), the film retains Shin’ichirô Ueda’s three-part construction: the completed zombie film, its pre-production, and its making-of. Three acts in crescendo where each time we learn a little bit more about this “crazy” shooting. Like this inconsistency where Western characters are adorned with Japanese names. Why ? You will know when you see the film to the end. Surprise !
The opening zombie film Cut! brings together the codes of Bis (series B) and Z (Le Bis du Bis): bad actors, scenes drawn out to the point of tedium, silly and unintentionally funny dialogue… everything that makes it so appealing. Cut! is a true homage to those films and Hazanavicius, who obviously knows his stuff, revels in it and we with him.
The second part reveals the pre-production. How the film was born, sponsored by a Japanese producer who wants to see a French adaptation of her latest hit in Japan. Very good idea that integrates the original film by Shin’ichirô Ueda into the plot of the remake. Finally, the making-of lifts the veil over all the inconsistencies of the film shown in the first part. Cut! is a goldsmith model and also a tribute to everyone Filmmakers.
